More and more managers realize that the core competence is vital for an enterprise's success on the competing market. The publishing industry is no exception. Especially in recent years, after China entering WTO, the competition in the book market becomes more and more fierce, even to"white-hot". For the managers of most of publishing houses, what they focus on is how to build and develop the core competence of publishing house. This paper tries to deal with this issue in four parts.1,The introduction of Core Competence & Its CharacteristicsC. K. Prahalad and G. Hamel, American well-known corporate strategists advanced "core competence " concept in 1990. They hold that core competence is the collective knowledge in the organization, especially about how to coordinate diverse production skills and integrate multiple streams of technologies. Core competence is unique and difficult for competitors to imitate. Due to the variances in the nature and characteristics of each industry, the definitions, connotations and characteristics of each industry's core competence are different, too. The core competence of publishing industry, an important part of culture industry, is the best power of systematic regulations and marketing operation in the industry. 2,The Composition of Core Competence of Publishing HouseThe concept of core competence is dynamic. Now, Chinese publishing industry is trying to get integrated into the world. The main compositions of a publishing enterprise's core competence include: management ideas, supervision mechanism, power of project scheme, promotion power, brand influence, attraction to talent, information management and cohesion of corporation culture. The First is management ideas. The success of talent of a corporation depends greatly on the management's ideas. Faced the changeable market, it's necessary for the managers of publishing house to be creative according to the circumstances. The second is supervision mechanism. Management ideas determine its supervision mechanism. A good supervision mechanism,like lubricating oil, ensures the corporation running smoothly. The third is the power of project scheme. The competition between publishers begins with the competition of project. The project scheme is the basis and the core of publishing and editing and its' every step is connected with the book sales. It plays a great role in promoting and integrating other resources. The fourth is promotion power. The promotion power is the capability of attracting customers and enlarging market shares. The best embodiment of promotion power is to guide and create market, toguide the customers and to create demands. It is the highest level of marketing, and it plays an important role in the field of forming and enhancing the core competence. The fifth is brand influence. The brand is the symbol of a publishing house. It is the basis of subsistence and development on which publishing house depends. The brand construction is a long programme. The sixth is the attraction to talent. As the first resource of all, the human resources play key role in the market competition. In order to get the development advantage in a long term, it's necessary for the publishing house to form a good mechanism to attract, retain and use the talent. The seventh is level of information management. The rational decision is connected with the exact information. The information management is directly related with the development of a publishing house. So, publishing house must train the excellent talents who have the professional knowledge and are good at getting information and managing information. The eighth is cohesion of corporation culture. The corporation culture is the concentration of a corporation's values, managing ideas and acts of clerks. It is the source of a corporation's cohesion and vitality.
