Overhead Catenary System (abbr. OCS) is vital to maintain normal running of Electrified Railway, the design of which is one of the important parts of Electrified Railway design. The production of OCS design is mainly in forms of plan and assembling drawing. As to assembling drawing, we can refer to the standard assembling drawings issued by Ministry of Railway, and only few changes should be made to satisfied different line conditions. Therefore, the plan becomes primary part of OCS design. For each interval, tunnel and station have different situations, it is impossible to finish the plan of OCS with simple and formulate. So, with tradition design method, designers should spend plenty of time and vigor to finish the design ofOCS.Tradition design method has many shortcomings: all the calculations and plan layout and tracing are finished manually. As it relates to many different fields, such as line, basement, bridge, tunnel, geology, station, maintenance, communications, signal, power, building, and traction station, it is inconvenient to cooperation with these fileds to ensure the reliability and accuracy of original datum. With the rapid development of computer science and its prevalence, almost all tradition word in the OCS design can be completed by CAD technology, which shortens the design period improves productivity and quality of design documents.At present, corresponding reports about how the foreigners utilize CAD to complete the design of OCS are very limit. CAD technology of OCS design is widely used over the all institute of railway ministry and EDI,but since the initial data of the OCS plan_design_are very plenty and disorderly; and cooperation between different departments is complex, the improvement of of such software hase been largely confined. Common disadvantages exist among those software: initial data are imported by hand and the datum format is complex; there are many limited terms of the software; intellectualized degree is low, which, to some extent, limit the improvement and application of OCS CAD technology. In addition, as the institutes have many design tasks, devotion to these filed is insufficient, some OCS CAD system are only confined to DOS, which could not catch up with the development of Operating System and also could not take good advantage of rich resources provided by Windows98 or other lasted operating systems.Based on the characteristics of the design of OCS, combined with development trends of OCS CAD System and the rich experience of the author, the paper gives a thorough presentation of the design method of OCS CAD System in five different chapters: Chapter One gives a brief introduction of the structure of OCS CAD System, meanwhile it shows the functions of each sub-system in detail; Chapter Two and Three give a thorough explain of the technology of OCS CAD System and its application on Windows98 and latest Operating System; Chapter Four expounds the data interface between the OCS Design and oter related fields; Chapter Five, also the last chapter, summarizes the technology of OCS CAD System and analyzes its application in the future.
