Workflow management systems (WFMSs) more and more become the basic technology for organization to perform their daily business processes. A consistent and reliable execution of such processes is crucial for all organizations. But currently, many Workflow Management System product and Workflow prototype System lack the capability of preserving the transactional characteristic of the workflow. It is just an important disadvantageous reason for the workflow pervasion and practicability. This can only be achieved by integrating transactional features, especially "workflow transactions" into WfMSs. Based on this idea, we discuss advanced transaction model, and describe an framework and execution environment implemented as transactional solution of a transactional workflow system by means of*compensate transaction that enables sets of inter-related tasks to be carried out and supervised in a dependable manner.Under this framework, the WfMS will be provided with the basic and availabletransaction capability and can keep the consistency of the workflow data. The system is general purpose and open: it has been designed and implemented as a set of CORBA services. The system serves as an example of the use of middleware technologies to provide a fault-tolerant execution environment for long running distributed applications.
