In this paper, based on the analysis of traditional monitoring and detecting system, a method to realize in-service monitoring for optical fiber networks was presented .By using wavelength division multiplexing, optical switch and optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) technology, networks can be supervised automatically. We analyse the factors to affect the transmission performance and clarify an idea to structure monitoring network according to area. This system can automatically,long-distance distributed monitor the change of optical fiber transmission loss peculiarity and optical cut off obstacle online, it mixes together network communication, optical measurement and Geography information system technology. And this system can be interlinked with TCP/IP protocol, confirms to the requirement of TMN. After introducing this monitoring system, the trans-performance of working optical transmission system is not affected.Using the monitoring project proposed here, it is demonstrated experimentally that it can realize real-time and on-line monitor to optical fiber network. For l.Slum optical communication system, we choose 1.55um signal light for monitoring, the dynamic range can reach 38dB, 113km monitor radius, and 1m resolution ratio , 1*8 port, and 30 adopt rate, are obtained. Considering the cascade connection of multi-serial, a computer can adopt optical power of 512 transmission systems at one time.
