The functional modeling method uses the functional model as the knowledge representation means to model the artificial systems, and uses it to resolve all sorts of problems. Functional model is a new modeling technique, which utilizes the functional knowledge to describe a system. It is developed in AI field, and is improved with the development of the research to the complex technical system. The functional models are more featly for some areas and tasks comparing to some former modeling techniques. Qua a new method, it has embedded strong energy, and it is becoming highly recognized and its use is becoming more prevalent.Based on the adequate literature the author has understood, the conception and theory of the functional modeling method are particularly described. The train of thoughts for developing the functional model are summarized, and several key problems in the developing process are analyzed. And then several familiar functional modeling techniques (such as MFM, GTST, and Fdef) are dissected and discussed by comparing. In this paper, the application of functional model to fault diagnosis is discussed by taking MFM as an example. And at last, the author also made an attempt at to apply the MFM modeling technique to representing the mechanical system, and then use a simple example to explain the applying.
