With the rapid development of computer networking, the contents of web-based applications are enriched enormously, and their domain is extending continuously. The requirements in city information service, public participation design and the online displaying of products in electronic commerce promote the emergence and development of web-based scene simulation. Web-Based Scene Simulation (WBSS) focuses on web, with the supports of computer networking, simulation and web virtual reality, and constructs a distributed interactive simulation environment with high immersion and fidelity which supports natural simulation interaction through web browsers.The concept and theory of WBSS was- systematically and thoroughly studied in this dissertation. The major content and innovation of the dissertation can be concluded as following four aspects:1. With a thorough analysis of the requirements of application domain, the concept of Web-Based Scene Simulation(WBSS) is put forward by referring to the ideas of related works;2. Based on the research of the theory of DEVS modeling and simulation, the detailed formal descriptions of Scene Simulation Object and Distributed Scene Simulation system are put forward;3. Under the guidance of the theories above, a multi-level WBSS system architecture is brought forward, and the ideas of implementation are discussed detailedly;4. A demo system-"Virtual City" is designed and implemented by applying the above concepts, theories and methods, which integrates functions including city tour guiding, city appearance propagandizing, on-line simulation of transportation control, and showing of blocks and house design pattern. The correctness of the theories and methods put forward by this dissertation are validated.
