Linux is one kind of computer OS (operating system) developed in recent years. Its appearance provides new opportunities for PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) to develop rapidly.Comparing with traditional PACS OS, Linux has many advantages. We can take these advantages to develop our own indigenous PACS, which should have excellent performance and little cost. Our purpose is to verify the possibility and the real performance of using Linux in PACS.In this thesis, we describe the academic background of the theme and our main tasks, which include design and realization of the PACS server and the instrument Gateway. We set out to construct our PACS server with Linux and MySQL (some kind of DBMS). Firstly, We learned about the characters of this PACS server through comparison in theory. Then we designed the instrument Gateway based on Linux. The Gateway obtains image files, transfer them and store them into the PACS database. We designed the standard DICOM Gateway and at least one kind of non-DICOM Gateway. At last, we turned our design into reality. According to the configuration and performance of the real system, we can realize the advantages of this system and its application potential.
