The millimeter-wave Gunn oscillator is an important key device in millimeter-wave radar and communication systems. For local oscillators, a high degree of frequency stability and low noise are required in addition to a reasonable output power level. Many existing Gunn oscillators employ reaction cavity stabiliz- tion. It is known, hower, that these oscillators may be subject to instabilities such as mode jumping and generation of unwanted frequencies. 揔a-band Gunn oscillator stabilized with a high-Q transmission cavity?presented in this paper has the advantages of improvement in reliability and reduction in size. This oscillator is mechanically tunable over a 1.4-0Hz bandwidth with an output power of more than 10mW and without any troublesome moding problems. In addition, a remarkable noise reduction has been achieved in this oscillator with the phase noise of -98.28dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 100kHz from the center frequency of 33.30Hz. |
