As the fast development of Linux in China and the world, the capability ofprocessing Chinese characters in Linux growth quickly. But for Linux is an operatesystem based on bits, there has not been even one Linux system which can processfour bytes character. China government issued GB18030-2000 standard in Mar 17th,2000, which use single byte, two bytes and four bytes character to present allChinese characters. All operating systems should implement this standard before Sep1st, 2001, so operating system must support four bytes character processing. This article advance the implement frame of Chinese Linux operate systembased on GB18030 standard after carefully considering other Linux systems, dividethe implementation into three steps: kernel support system, base support system andfull support system, implement all functions of kernel support system and mostfunctions of base support system. So Linux system can recognize and convertGB18030 standard characters, input and display GB18030 standard characters nomatter under character interface or graphics interface. This article introduce the design and implement of Chinese Linux operatesystem based on GB18030 standard, so Linux can recognize and process thecharacters encoding with mixed two bytes and four bytes. This work is the firstimplementation of four bytes character support not only in China, but also in theworld, it also can be the base of minority language information processing underLinux.
