Taking a sweeping view of the establishment and development of university museums domestically and overseas, drawing lessons from the current research achievements in museum studies, and analyzing profoundly the advantages of resource and the current conditions of Nanjing Normal University, this dissertation proposes some individual reflections on building a university museum at Nanjing Normal University. University museum is a significant base for constructing the system of cultural services, promoting teaching and scientific research. Currently, most of the celebrated universities in China have their own specific museums, which has even becomes one of their distinctive features and symbols. As a university with a long history and rich culture, Nanjing Normal University has unique resources in cultural relics, which has already contained the basic conditions to set up her museum. As one of the major historical and cultural monuments under state protection, the "Family Cemetery at the Crane Taoist Temple in Northern Jin Dynasty " is located in NNU’s Xianlin Campus and remains almost intact, which is pretty rare among universities in terms of relic resource. A museum depending on this heritage group could fully fulfill its functions and provide strong academic supports in discipline-building and teaching. Moreover, it will fill in a gap in the fields of preservation of cultural relics in Nanjing, a capital for six dynasties. This dissertation also makes a feasibility analysis of the heritage, collections and the formation of the museum’s internal functional areas and interprets the far-reaching significances of establishing a museum in Nanjing Normal University.
