Discourse Analysis On The International Mainstream News Report Of The 30th Summer Olympic Games

The Olympic Games is the sporting event which is the best in terms of scale,wide participation and far-reaching impact so far in the world community. TheOlympic field is not just the sports venue for the athletes world-wide, but also is themedia arena for the world’s media. Since the2008Beijing Olympic Games, thereporting of the Olympics by the Chinese domestic media has been raised to a newlevel.The sports news discourse evolution process and the sports journalism are boundtogether inextricably. The construction of the sports news discourse promotes thedevelopment of the sports journalism while the social demands on the sportsjournalism boost the evolution of the sports news discourse.This paper summarises the discourse features of the London2012Olympicsports news reported by the various media organizations of China, Japan, UnitedStates and British by using the news discourse and content analysis, mathematicalstatistics, literature review, expert interviews and logical analysis etc, with theoriginal news materials coming from four mainstream newspapers around the world:People’s Daily, Asahi Shimbun, New York Times and The Times. The related proposalsand suggestions to the Olympic sports news reports of our country is given in thispaper and these contribute to make our sports journalism to meet with theinternational practice better.It was found in this study that all the four medias attach great importance to thereports of the Olympic Games. The Olympic reports quantity of People’s Daily andAsahi Shimbun was smaller than that of New York Times and The Times. New YorkTimes and The Times were richer in the genre than People’s Daily and Asahi Shimbun.The news contents of New York Times and The Times were also relatively balancedand comprehensive. In term of the news discourse, the expression styles of People’sDaily and Asahi Shimbun were single whereas the styles of New York Times and TheTimes manifested the sports news discourse with superiorities of diversification, detailedness and systematization.
