As an important pillar industry of China, product manufacturing industry plays a very important role in the national economy. China has become a global manufacturing power, but due to the lack of innovation in product design, product malfunction is less competitive, China's manufacturing power is still unknown. Innovative design of product has become an important way of improving the core competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises. Networked collaborative design is a field of study of the modern design theory and methods. Be aimed at the overall goal of the product design, collaborative product design is a process of solving the designing problem of the product under mutual cooperation among the main designing part in the distribution of multiple network environment. Collaborative product data model is the basic of achieving collaborative design; the paper discusses the problem according to the collaborative product data exchange and sharing.STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data) is international standard which is drafted by International Organization for Standardization (ISO).Although STEP standards solve problems of information sharing and exchange among different CAX system in a neutral mechanism, STEP neutral file is not well supported by Web environment and the database and it is difficult for Web browser to deal with the product data expressed by the EXPRESS language, so, it's hard for STEP to adapt to the product data sharing and exchange under the condition of Internet environment.XML (eXtensible Markup Language)is an extensible markup language designed by the World Wide Web Committee (W3C), XML is a simple, very flexible text format derived from SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) that it inherits the scalability and platform independence to provide a cross-platform data exchange method.This article puts forward a way which can be converted to the XML data format from the product data of STEP in the internet environment after analyzing the product data based on STEP and XML. Also, it gives out the way how to convert between the standard EXPRESS language and XML and their relationships so as to implement the conversion of product data and share the remote information under the Collaborative design environment . Finally, in Java EE platform, combined with Struts 2 framework to construct a data exchange and sharing of product prototype system based on STEP and XML to verify the results of this study.
