News parody is a new media practice to mock and criticize the traditional news by rewriting all the facts in an amusing way. This special kind of news report was created by Chinese netizens at the beginning of this century and the American news satire shows can date back to 1990s. However, it doesn't attract much attention until 2004 when shows like "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart", "Colbert Report" stands out and many young audiences choose them as the only access to the U.S. presidential election instead of traditional media. But news parody is still on the waiting list for most scholars of journalism in China who pay much attention to the phenomenon of Kuso on the Web.This paper uses the theory of intertextuality to explain what news parody is and how the traditional news facts can be successfully rewritten. And Bakhtin's Carnival theory, with the academic fruits from Birmingham sub-cultural research, is applied to look into the phenomenon and reflect on the limitation of news parody. As the emerging mass culture evolved from youth subculture, news parody serves as a platform for the public to release pressure and take initiative to participate in the public affair. At the same time, the ecology of media culture is diversified. The most important reason why we need news parody is that these ironic texts can push the audience to give a second thought on many social issues while being amused.
