In history of contemporary vocational education , there were happened three appellative controversy ,"industry education or vocational education"and"vocational education or technical education"and"vocational-technical education or vocational education". In the back of appellative controversy , frailness of basic on conception at vocational education and people's dim cognition on it was hidden .In 1996,legislation of《Vocational Education Law in People's Republication of China》newly established the legal status of conception at vocational education. However , the controversy of what is vocational education was not terminated . on the contrary , practice in vocational education and construction on subject was in the ascendant , even brought forward a new ,more urgent demand on how to solve the controversy . Whether given a scientific answer , in a sense , has already effect on the more development on vocational education.Varied from thinking model of the vocational education defined by What is vocation , the vocation was researched in the text. In visual angle of history and culture, the historical origins of vocational education , and the relation of the vocational education to the types of education such as technical education, higher education, vocational training , industry education was analyzed. In some profiles of vocational education , the prolific meaning of vocational education was opened out by reviewing the correlative fact or the phenomena of it .From the historical origin of it , the essence of vocational education possessed the character of technology . Vocational education that was narrowly defined as special name of fostering technological workman composed of the educational system trichotomy with technical education and specialty education. This reflected cultural tradition that western class society despised physical labor and the basic of severely divisive society . A lot of differences between the conception at vocational education in our country rooted in cultural diversity of china and Hesperian or in diversity of social system or in thinking and selection of different culture , different conception at social vocational education.Vocational education was a intricate culture phenomena .Any attempts to substitute one term for another term was proved that the endeavor was hard to avoid blemish . In order to acknowledge this complexity and cultural tradition and language custom in our country, some suggestions were brought forward . The conception at vocational education was applied on the condition of ideal or notion . The conception at technical education was applied on the condition of school system and subject. The conception at vocational education was applied on the condition of nondegree station training .The conception at"technical education and vocational training"was regard as a all-around term substituted for the conception at vocation .
