Individualism is an important attribute of Chinese literature and language teaching in our middle schools. Since 1970s, individualism has been a focus in education reforms attracting much attention from teachers and educational authorities in various countries. That individualism has significant impacts on educating young talents with creativity has been confirmed by long-time practices in many nations. Traditionally, we used to overly emphasize uniformity in the teaching process, and evaluate students' performances with a single standard. This has been shown to have severe limitations on the development of students' original thoughts and creativity. The obsolete and undesirable teaching methods must be changed, especially in the teaching of literature and language of our mother tongue. It is totally wrong to simply treat the rich and lively language as a tedious doctrine and confine students to piles of rigid rules and formulas in their learning. This dissertation discusses the notion of individualized teaching in the teaching of Chinese literature and language from the perspective of individualism of the teaching materials, the teachers, and the students. In addition, we also consider individualism both in the reading and writing processes. This dissertation provides a comprehensive understanding of the importance of individualism that is of significance in the practice and to the current phase of teaching reform. The dissertation also reviews various problems existing in the individualized teaching of Chinese literature and language, and expresses the author's points of view against excessive liberalism and false individualism. Approaches to rectify these incorrect tendencies are proposed. It is hoped that these can help improve the current Chinese language teaching.Reform of the teaching methods and renewal of the teaching philosophy is the task of every teacher. We must always work hoard towards real individualism and creativity in the teaching practice. Our endeavor will undoubtedly make the teaching of our mother language more attractive and nutritious to the students.
