Textbook is an essential carrier of curriculum, through which other people get to know not only the thinking mode of viewing the world of our people but also the course of our social development and nation’s culture and spirit. Chinese textbook as the important disseminator of Chinese knowledge makes a big difference to teachers and students. Its compilation heads for a more than a gang from the building of a network. During the period of compulsory education, its major responsibilities are to make students learn how to use the language to communicate with other people, and absorb outstanding culture at all times and in all lands to raise their cultural makings and spiritual growth.Value orientation is regarded as an organized, internalized and stable idea affecting individual or group’s world view or choice of acts. Value orientation of the textbook is the spirit and core of textbook compilation and it embodies in what way the authorities transfer value to educate to help them build the philosophy and value conforming to social requirements. Meanwhile, the educated retrain themselves to think and act positively according to a special set of value standards and become a qualified citizen.The thesis compares and analyzes two materials: "American Language------Selected Textbooks from Famous Middle Schools in America compiled by Ma Haolan, and published by China Women Publishing House; curricular standard experimental textbook of compulsory education "Language" released by People’s Education Press and Short-listed by Examination Committee of Primary and Middle School Teaching Materials in 2001-2002. In the principle of seeking truth from facts, the thesis gives a careful analysis of value orientation of the texts and tries to tell the differences between Chinese and American language; moreover, the thesis introduces the traits of texts selection, compilation and value orientation of American language and absorbs their advanced experience of curriculum compilation.This thesis comprise five parts of contents:(1)This chapter explains the reason for topic choosing, the meaning and purpose of the topic, and reviews the related theories on ancient and modern literature and defines related concepts.(2) From the moral and political perspective, the paper formulates analysis standards of value orientation and build a comparison table in all aspects between Chinese and American textbooks.(3)The author from the moral and political perspective analyzed the inherent value orientation of the textbook “Junior High School of Chinese Textbook published by People’s Education Press in 2001-2002.(4) The author from the moral and political perspective analyses the inherent value orientation of the textbook “American Language” published in 2008.(5) The author compares and analyses the differences between the value orientation in the junior high school of language textbook and learns selectively outstanding features of texts in American textbooks based on insisting national cultural tradition.
