A Study Of The Impression Of Tibet In Oriental Magazine

In modern Chinese enlightenment movement, many publications appeared in China. But only "Eastern Miscellany", like a witness to Chinese history from 1904 to 1948,i.e. from the late part of Qing Dynasty to the eve of new China, has influenced people from then on until nowadays like a tumbler. As a large comprehensive publication, this magazine, with painstaking efforts of a large number of editors with their wisdom, embodying a dream of Chinese intellectuals during their pursuit for the modern progress of China, was deeply cared and supported by many readers. With its unique style, this magazine became a shining star among many commercial presses at that time. During the 45 years life time of "East Miscellany", different domestic political forces appeared and disappeared, national crisis became deeper and deeper. Articles in this magazine covered many sides, not only domestic issues, but also international public opinions, situations both central and coastal areas of China, the frontier or remote areas of people’s livelihood, large issue of the country, and common people’s livelihood problems. The author of this paper selects all articles in "East Miscellany" during 1904-1948, classified and analyses them, for understanding the major historical events, the whole stories of famous events, people’s political positions, their characteristics, their important value and significance public opinion about Tibet during that period of time.The first chapter of this paper will introduce the background of its first issue, its basic aspect and all editor-in-chiefs, writers and their outstanding features.The second chapter will focus on "Tibetan impression" from this magazine. Articles related to the public opinions about Tibetan will be analyzed in two sorts, political affairs and social culture issues, for making clear those important historical events, and trying to understand peoples’attitudes at that time, also the deep intentions of editors and writers from their reports.After the analysis above, with a strong sense of reality and deep concern for practical realities, the third chapter will show both history and reality, review current based on a large number of historical information and give an attention to the field investigation.Through a study of the Tibet public opinions from "Eastern Miscellany", we can get details not only about many events, but also the relationship between central government and Tibetan local government in each period of time, and get a dynamic picture, which will inspire our thinking, and show the significant meaning of the reports about Tibet in this magazine.
