The report of PISA2012released recently indicated that Shanghai students won achampion once again, but our students have an average weekly working time of13.8hours, which is far higher than the OECD average time, about seven hours, and alsoranked first. That is to say, Shanghai st’udents schoolwork is much more than that ofstudents in other countries even becomes a burden to them. In addition,a surveycarried out by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences has indicated that one-third ofthe children who were surveyed, wished to sleep longer, and that there were nearlyforty percent of the students hoping to alleviate the burden on them. Among them, theproportion of the junior high school students who were eager to reduce burden was3.1per cent higher than the high school students. It is obvious that overloadedacademic burden on junior high school students is a quite serious problem. Theresearch aims to dig out the root causes of overloaded school and put forward thecorresponding countermeasures and recommendations with S Junior High Schoolstudents as subjects by various means such as questionnaire and confirmatory study inorder to give certain reference to the rationalization of academic burden on juniorhigh school students. The whole thesis is divided into ifve chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, including the background, the purpose, thesignificance of this study, research methods and the definition of the concept ofacademic burden; The second chapter is the literature review, including the outline of domestic andforeign-related reforms to reduce the academic burden on students, the relationbetween the academic burden and schoolwork time, and the research about the resultsand suggestions of the academic burden; The third chapter is result of survey on the academic burden on the S schoolstudents in Shanghai. The survey indicates that there is still a heavy academic burdenon students in S Junior High School, and that their average homework doing time isalmost equal to the PISA test results. It also suggests the average sleep time of less than eight hours and long time of atfer-class tutoring, and the result that students indifferent grades have different subjective feelings towards the academic burden. Dueto the limited capacity of the author, the survey simply contains the outwardmanifestation of academic burden and students ’attitudes towards it, while the impactof academic burden on students’ psychology won’t be developed in the research. The fourth chapter is the cause analysis of the current state of academic burdenon S junior high school students. From the aspect of schools, curriculum, schedulearrangements, their different types and teachers’ professional qualities are key tostudents’ overburdened academic pressure; from the aspects of family, too muchacademic burden is caused by over expectation of only child, lack of communicationbetween parents and children and frequent tutoring laid on children withoutconsideration of their willingness; from the aspect of students themselves, due todisparity of students learning ability, each individual has different subjunctive feelings.More impotrantly, social value orientation is the deeper root cause of overloadedschoolwork burden. The fitfh chapter is the suggestions and countermeasures of improving the currentstate of schoolwork burden on S junior high school students. First in terms of school, more reasonable managements of school daily routine, comprehensive courses andactivities should be carried out, as well as improvement of teachers’ professionalqualities and optimization of schoolwork. Second in terms of family, parents shouldpay more attention to the relationship with their children, more smoothcommunication and rational family education as well; next in terms of studentsthemselves, they should care about their mental health and ask for assistance innecessary; last but not least, social media should give full play to correct guidance ofsocial orientation, advocating talent diversity.
