Symphonie concertante was an important instrumental genre which emerged between the late eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century. Despite its brief history and limited number of works, this genre is very much favored by numerous important composers. Its existence played a pivotal role in the development of western instrumental genres. Symphonie concertante bears characteristics of both baroque and classical periods and features of both symphonies and concertos. It laid a solid foundation for the creation of matured classicism. There was a little about researching on Symphonie concertante. This article expatiated Symphonie concertante from the aspect of music historiography and music sociology.The article is divided into three parts. The first is that the study on symphonie concertante starts with the positioning of its attributes, in order that the significance of its existence will be better understood, and the misunderstanding be excluded. The second part is that a series of analysis and comparison should be made, together with further study of its unique features and characteristics which it shares with other genres. The third part describes the rise and fall of Symphonie concertante, through the study of which thus making a systematic settlement of overall development context of Symphonie concertante. As a result, not only a comprehensive understanding will be achieved, but also every aspect this genre touches upon will get an appropriate explanation,and to explain the importance of the study of Western music genre by choosing the subject.
