This paper takes the Ganxi's former residence and its perimeter, the cultural resources, as the studying object. This paper also takes the protection and exploitation of the former residence and its perimeter made by those the descendents of Gan's family, as well as those social forces like the government and the enterprises as the studying measurement. We study the cases to investigate the current cultural resources and explore the correct attitude and the general principal of the protection and exploitation. This paper includes: the cultural significance of the Ganxi's former residence for Nanjing, and the way to maximize its cultural value; the motivation, behavior and result of the interference from the government, enterprises and some other social forces; the role and the function the government plays in the protecting and exploiting the cultural resources; the encouragement and cultivation of the'cultural resourcers'; and the right attitudes towards the original cultural resources in the process of commercialization and the reconstruction of the old city.This paper falls in four chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the qualities and characteristics of Ganxi's former residence as the cultural resource. Chapter 2 makes the case studies and analysis of the descendents taking the legacy of Kun Opera and traditional music. Chapter 3 investigates the interference from the government, the enterprises and some other forces, and further analyze the motivation, the gain and loss. Chapter four proposes some suggestions on the protection and exploitation of Ganxi's former residence.
