This paper tackles The Book of Admonitions(Jian-jie Lu),a hitherto-unstudied compilation of topical short narratives that spans the Tang and Five Dynasties,as the subject. The first part of the paper is a general introduction in which I synthesized the author's life and works, reviewed the nuances and circulation of different versions of the book, and explored its overall cultural values.Four topics are ephasized in this part:the collecting, inscribing and collating of the Song version in different time periods;the distinguishment of the true stories from the faulse, some of which has been attributed to the popular beliefs;the exploration on the book's historical value, especially its significance in supplementing the works and anacdotes of literatis in the Tang and Five Dynasties;and an investigation on the later narratives and notes, which record and utlize the texts in Jian-jie Lu.The second part of this paper makes textual research on fourteen idems of the book, tries to clarify the source of a certain poem(such as for "Wang-guo Yin" in the seventh volumn),to examine the poet's life(such as for "Jia Wu-zhi" in the eighth volumn),and to analyze the story pattern(such as for "Jian Yuan-ru" in the ninth volumn). This endeavor is expected to figure out the original condition of the records in Jian-jie Lu. |
