As both the core and the tough part of Chinese vocabulary, synonymous monosyllabic-noun and disyllabic-noun with the same morpheme constitute an important part of synonymies, of which the similarities and differences are rather complicated involving the following aspects as phonetics, grammar, lexicography and rhetoric. A deep exploration into the nature of this kind of synonymy might not only provide a multi-leveled view on the interrelated research fields in modern Chinese but also practically benefit the acquisition of Chinese as a second language, as well as supply worthy data for the compiling of professional and special dictionaries.Given a relatively closed -observation on this kind of synonymies, this paper makes a descriptive research and explores into the origin of this kind of synonymy, with a special consideration on the interpretation of some of the language phenomena. Besides the introduction, the main body of the thesis consists of 4 chapters:Chapter 1 mainly explores into the corresponding relations inform and the types of semantic relations of monosyllabic-noun and disyllabic-noun, resulting in a complex of interrelations.Chapter 2 mainly discusses about the main paths by which the disyllabic-noun maches Semantically with the monosyllabic- noun. They are respectively combination of two same meanings, chemical combination of two different meanings, and attachment of affix. Among the 3 paths, the first one is most frequently used.Chapter 3 explores into the origin of how disyllabic-noun is produced and coexists with monosyllabic-noun in contemporary Chinese. The paper makes a hypothesis that production of this kind of disyllabic- noun results in many interrelated factors and the coexistence of them depends on their diferent" function". Actually the tendency of disyllabication of words provides room for the coexistence of the both.Chapter 4 mainly disgusses the application of this thesis in teaching Chinese as a second language.
