We try to study and describe the forming ,developing and traits of the fables found in Pre-Qin thinkers'works at the viewpoint of cultural studies. The article has four chapters. We give the reasons for the uprising of Pre-Qin fables of the thinkers.First, the fable is defined exactly, which has four characters:novelity, shortness, narrativeness, and morality.Second,we find out fables have three sources :myth, history, and intellectual artifact. Third,we pay attention to the historical background of fables ,focusing on the subject, who produced most of the fables.Fourth, we divided the fables into North and South in style. That is chapter one.In chapter two and three, we discern the characteristics of fables in the works of different thinkers,in which we can find out the evolvement and development of this genre. In Mo-zi,there are more similes than fables ,where the latter is unconvincing.Mencius have wonderful fables, though he uses a lot of parables in his works.Xun-zi ,is another famous Confucian, blends folklore into fables, producing a new kind of genre,riddle.Zhuang-zi is the most excellent autor of fables in the period of time.Han-fei-zi has several collections of fables.Lvshi-Chunqiu is good at organizing several fables into one article to express some opinion.Zhan-guo-ce Appears at last ,where fables are used more tactically. In chapter four,we compare Chinese fables with Aesop's fables and fables in Buddhism, from which we can see clearly the national characteristics of Chinese fables.
