The thesis outlines the origin, species and cultural background of Nushu which was popularized among female in Hunan province and some other place as a transfiguration of Chinese character. We have discussed the relationship between inheritance and innovation of Nushu. We analyzed the design principles of nushu and explored their implementation from an aesthetic point of view. Attempts have been made to design several practical fonts, such as the Hanzi Nushu and Pinyin Nushu fonts based on the composition principles of Nushu character. The layout of the above two fonts was compiled in the light of similar features of notes and movement in music. We have also discussed the approach to exploring various minority cultures in the age of network. In the thesis, we suggest that the value of studying Nushu lies not only in the characters themselves, but also in its composition principles and aestheticism. The possible applications of Nushu in computer typography were also investigated. The work helps to computerize Nushu by utilizing the correspondent techniques for Hanzi. It is proposed that a better way to inherit and develop Nushu culture is to incorporate it into Hanzi and break through the language barriers. The investigation will also promote artistic expression of Chinese characters and enriches Chinese character design. It will be an inspiring research direction to combine design practice and minority culture in the age of network.
