This thesis is a special subject-study on Zhang Zhao's calligraphy ideology of the early Qing Dynasty, who admired the great calligrapher Dong Qichang.Zhang Zhao's calligraphy was greatly appreciated at the time, and his calligraphy ideology was mainly reflected in the Tian Pingzhai Calligraphy and Painting epigraph, which was a comment on some calligraphic works and paintings.Five topics are discussed in the thesis. The first, Zhang Zhao's calligraphy ideology and his communications with his fellow calligraphers and painters are talked about based on the primary analysis of Tian PingzhaiCalligraphy and Painting epigraph. The second chapter is focus on his core idea—Tianquan Lun and his criteria in calligraphic criticism. The third chapter is a comparison of the calligraphy ideology between Zhang Zhao and Dong Qichang; The fourth chapter is a comparison of the calligraphy ideology between Zhang Zhao and Gao Shiqi. Finally, the comments on Zhang Zhao by calligraphers of Qing Dynasty are discussed.Based on the discussion of the above-mentioned five aspects, it can be concluded that Zhang Zhao stands for the principle of man of honor—cultivating oneself according to a religious doctrine from various aspects: for example: behaving oneself (being the whole man) by reading books and cultivating diligently could lead to one's refinement, thus making wonderful calligraphy works. Zhang Zhao's view of studying from authentic calligraphers claims that one can appreciate "Daoism" with sincerity and faith, then improve one's calligraphic skill with the help of "Daoism", hence wonderful calligraphy works. Zhang Zhao holds that calligraphy works should emphasize stylistic charm, and he has integrated Dong Qichang's calligraphic style into his own, and managed to surpass Dong's achievement in this aspect. Zhang Zhao studies from Dong but is not restricted to Dong's style. To a great extent, he plays the leading role in the transformation of the style of the Tie school at the early stage of Qian Long's reign, so his calligraphy-studying process provides successful experience for today's calligraphers and calligraphy lovers.. |
