In order to give an general introduction of Yin-yang and Wu-xing,I write this article.In chapter one.I try to research the origin of Yin-yang(Positive and Negative Forces)and Wu-xing(Five elements,including wood,fire soil,metal,and water),and draw a conclusion:the concept of Yin-yang originates from the observation of whether the sun is shining,then it comes to mean warmth and coldness,at last it has the meaning of positive and negative forces and principles.The concept Wu-xing firstly means five kinds of material which is necessary in people's common lives,then it is abstracted to mean five elements and five kinds of characters.In chapter two,I have a study of the combination of Yin-yang and Wu-xing,and give a general explanation of why they combine and how they combine.With the combination of Yin-yang and Wu-xing,the school of Yin-yang and Wu-xing comes into being.During the Zhan-guo Dynasty,the school of Yin-yang becomes very popular and have a widely effect on the society. As an school,the school of Yin-yang never exists after Qin Dynasty,but that doesn't mean that the thought of Yin-yang and Wu-xing has died out from then on.In fact,after Qin Dynasty,the concepts of Yin-yang and Wu-xing are involved in the works of the Confucianists and the Taoists,and become indiscerptible parts of their thoughts.In chapter three, I have discussed the main contents of the school.Firstly,they think that the natural calamities and strange astronomical phenomenon are closely connected with people's behavior,especially the governors' behavior.Trough this way,they warn the governors not to be too cruel to the civilians. Because they think the reason why the natural calamities and strange astronomical phenomenon are closely connected with people's behavior is that there is induction between people and 'Tian' which means the nature and God.Secondly,they insist that people should be accordant with the rhythm of nature,and take different actions in different seasons.It shows that the school of Yin-yang more practical than other schools of the same time,and they pay more attention to the nature and the agriculture,which is also the character of Qi-xue.Thirdly,the school of Yin-yang advocates that there are five virtues.which is the virtue of wood,fire,soil,metal and water.The five virtues are circular,and each virtue is corresponding to a dynasty,so when a new virtue is to be in order.it means the olddynasty comes to its end,and a new dynasty is to be established.Fourthly,as to the opinion about geography,they think there are 81 countries in the world,which are as large as China is,and China is only one of them.lt shows that the school of Yin-yang has an eyesight which is larger than that people ever have had.In chapter four,though comparing with the other schoolsj have showed that the school of Yin-yang is very special,and it has its own principle which differentiates itself from other schools,and the principle is just to be accordant with the rhythm of natureAt the same time,the thought of the school of Yin-yang is rhythmical.They insist that the plants and animals are different in different seasons,and people should have different policies in different seasons.The alternation of nature is rhythmical,so the behavior of people is also rhythmical.At last,as far as the mode of thinking is concerned,the school of Yin-yang is also particular.They think the world is a whole world with time and space as its longitude and woof,and they also think the development of history is circular with dual forces of Yin-yang and Wu-xing,while the other schools always has only Yin-yang as their force.
