Abstract/Summary:
Since the Hundred Days’ Reform(1898),numerous Chinese feminists have been fighting for women’s "half of the sky" and the May Fourth Movement,a human liberation movement of which women’s emancipation was an integral part, was supported by many intellectuals and the Marxist view of women was first introduced into China and widely disseminated.During this period, some progressive young women intellectuals in Tianjin were ready to respond to the situation, and they called on women to establish women’s patriotic societies early on,and made their own attempts to run newspapers.Through the press, the women of the Awakening Era finally had a channel to enter the public sphere and make their voices heard. This article takes the 1923-1924 Tianjin newspaper Nv Xing as the research object. After consulting microfilm and paper copies of the original newspaper materials in the National Library, the Shanghai Library and the Peking University Library,it explores the role of Nv Xing in the Awakening Era in women’s self-emancipation movement through the intersection of the history of women’s liberation, the history of journalism and communication, and the history of public opinion. The text is divided into seven chapters.Chapters 1 and 2 introduce the historical background, promotion, editorial team, editorial policy, purpose of publication and readership of Nv Xing.Chapters 3 to 6 are the main body of this paper, taking a case study and textual analysis approach. After interpreting several major issues of Nv Xing and its column arrangement,a longitudinal study of Nv Xing is conducted to explore the interaction between its feminist media issues and that era,and the emergence of feminist media issues, the forms and discursive cores presented in the paper media, the different dimensions of feminist media issues, their content and the rhetorical positions used.Through the theoretical exploration of these sections, this article aims to find out what measures feminist media professionals can take to maximise their interests in dealing with social contradictions and gender antagonisms;and to explore how feminist media personalities could create a more socially resonant public opinion environment when fighting for women’s rights and social status. At that time, the public was eager to learn about the turbulent society and the rapidly changing perceptions. The editorial group of Nv Xing, influenced by their contemporary progressive press,New Youth,Women’s Voice,Jue Wu and so on,focused on feminist issues that combined women’s liberation with national liberation, and reflected the realities of women, giving the newspaper the ability to act as a historical vehicle and providing detailed material for current and future generations to understand the lives of women during its period.Although Nv Xing was not able to break out of the discursive structure set by male intellectuals,it advocated a strong sense of resistance in its approach to women’s emancipation and strove to unite all available forces to fight for women’s rights and social status. It set a media agenda for the people of Tianjin and the areas where the press was distributed at the time to discuss the way forward for women, and was cleverly combined with the public agenda to make the independence of women and their social status on an equal footing with men a modern symbol pursued by the times.
