(Volume I and Volume II,1996)is an influential intermediate Chinese course for non-native learners. It has specific characteristics on frame design , materials collection, training system. However, with the unceasing exploration of the study of discipline theory and teaching practice that Chinese is as the secondary language teaching and eight years' application after publication, the drawbacks are manifested in new words, exercises ,etc. And the new intermediate Chinese course is being complied. Therefore, it is important to analyze the former one's virtues and shortcomings in order to improve our work.This article presents an analysis of the characteristics of ,acknowledges its achievements on materials collection, emphasis on communication principle, emphasis on reappearance, emphasis on culture and appropriation on degree of difficulty, points out its shortcomings on text arrangement, new words, exercises, distinction between different literary styles, brings up the different ideas on collecting the great works of literature, making a distinction between notional words and function words when explaining the grammar. On the basis of above study, this article brings up some ideas .First of all, improve the teaching on words. The main ways are : introduce the teaching on morphemes and phrases .apply a method of using classified vocabulary to enlarge learners' amount of new words on the basis of scope of semantics. Secondly , how to train the learners' ability of speaking a whole paragraph or a full article should be stressed. We should introduce the new achievements of study on paragraph and article into our textbook in order to help the learners to improve their ability. Thirdly, the exercises should cover all the phrases and grammars and the amount of the exercises should be large .The types of the exercises should be selected carefully.
