Epitaph is a written short description on tombstone which inscribes the dead's achievements and experiences. It is buried with tombstone in tomb inorder to express his relatives'and friends'sorrow and memory towards thedead. Episaph was popular in Tang Dynasty, it contains a great deal of value-able data related to politics, economy, culture, military affairs of Tang Dy-nasty. That is to say,epitaph can reflect the social features of Tang Dynasty.The thesis mainly researchs the socia1 culture and custom of Tang Dy-nasty through many epitaph unearthed recently. Meanwhile, the thesis makesuse of former experts'research results,and refers to many historical books con-cerning society and cu1ture of Tang Dynasty. In the thesis,author put forwarda few new opinions about researches of Tang Dynasty society history. Manyexperts and scholars think women in Tang Dynasty were radical and active inmarital life. Remarriage is a usual thing. Author points out that majority ofwomen is conservative and traditional on marriage view. After death of theirhusbands, they seldom remarry,but support the eldcrly and children by them-selves.Respecting old men was a social custom in Tang Dgnasty. The govern-ment, often awards the elderly who are in high ages and good conduct honour.These compaign does good to the society of early Tang Dynasty. Author dis-cusses the essence of activity scale and significance through examining manyepitaphs.At last, author also research relationship between literature and epitaph.Author thinks that epitaph is important method to impact literary tendency ofTang Dynasty.
