This thesis uses many research methods such as language material analysis in both Chinese and Interlanguage and questionnaire survey to study foreign students' acquisition of topic construction. The study leads us to three findings as follows. First, given that the foreign students and local students have the same amount of language material, the number of topic construction they use is almost the same. Therefore, it can be said that foreign students have awareness in topic construction. Second, foreign students with different native languages almost have the same acquisition order, so we can conclude that their native languages do not affect their acquisition order. Third, foreign students have a hard time using topic construction because they usually use their native languages to translate it literally. But as their level of Chinese increases, the rate of their error decreases. This thesis consists of 6 chapters. The first chapter introduces the main purpose of the research, the value in doing it, and the methods. In chapter 2, the author reviews some relative research about topic construction. In chapter 3, the author discusses the classification of topic construction. Based the former research, she classifies topic construction into 5 categories. In chapter 4, the author summarizes the acquisition order of topic construction through analyzing questionnaire and language material analysis in both Chinese and Interlanguage. In chapter 5, the author analyzes all of the mistakes and errors, and tries to explain the reasons why they make these mistakes. In chapter 6, after studying the language points concerning topic construction in two authorized Chinese teaching syllabus and three sets of Chinese textbooks, the author brings forward suggestions on topic construction teaching. Finally, the author provides a brief summary of the thesis and states shortages of this thesis.
