Topic construction is a special but common kind of sentence pattern in Chinese language, which is also a difficult point of Chinese acquisition by overseas students. Through the analysis of composition corpus by overseas students from Thailand and Vietnam, this paper aims to explore the Chinese topic construction acquisition situation by those students. The results of the survey are shown below: First, the topic construction acquisition by overseas students from Thailand and Vietnam may be affected by the positive transfer of mother tongues. The topic consciousness is rather strong, but students with different mother language backgrounds tend to perform similarly in using various topic constructions; Second, the order of topic construction acquisition by overseas students from Thailand and Vietnam is generally the same, which is not affected by the diverse mother tongue backgrounds; Third, Bias and errors of topic constructions may occur due to four aspects of reasons, which, however, can be reduced along with the improvement of students’ Chinese level. This paper is divided into five chapters: The first chapter is an introduction part, which introduces the topic selection causes, relevant research achievements, study methods and corpus sources. Chapter two combines with the analytical results of topic constructions by previous scholars. It takes the semantic relationship of topics and themes as the standard to divide topic constructions into six categories. By statistical analysis of the interlanguage corpus, chapter three provides a detail discussion on the use of various topic constructions by overseas students from Thailand and Vietnam. Through approaches like relative accuracy and containing amount, makes a summarization of the acquisition order of topic constructions by overseas students from Thailand and Vietnam and conducts error analysis for all kinds of topic constructions. According to the survey results, corresponding teaching suggestions are proposed in chapter four. Finally, the conclusion and shortcomings of this study are concluded in chapter five.
