Li Wenyu(1840-1911) was a famous Catholic intellectual,theologian,philosopher and a journalist in late Qing dynasty.Thanks to his knowledge of west culture and theology,his capability of proficiency in three foreign languages,his endeavors to translate west books and to publish newspaper,he had great contribution to "West Learning Spreading to the East".Li Wenyu had many works which added up to more than 60 books,including 39 books he translating from west,and he was considered as "no one year in his life had he no book".He was reputed as "the first journalist in Pudong in modern China".He was the chief editor and main writer of Yiwenlu,which was the third newspaper after Shanghaixinbao and Shenbao in modern Shanghai.The West Learing transmitted by Li Wenyu to late Qing dynasty,in his 33 years'translation career,could be cataloged into three parts:the west science,the west political and the west religion(Catholicism),and had great benefits in popularizing of natural science, enlightening Chinese citizen's intelligence and reforming social customs.According to the change of the trend of times and to his special personal status,Li Wenyu had his value orientation to West Learing. He had a sense to take the essence of religion,science,chinese culture and western culture. He spreaded the western classical natural science,reported the new application technology of the second industrial revolution and criticized Darwin's theory of evolution. In his opinion, evolutionism was not only against the Genesis,but also against the western modern natural science research and experimental results.He spreaded the western democratic politics, advocated mercantilism and free competition and claimed to take back political rights through the international law.He had a different view from the general understanding of the secular intellectuals about "democracy" and "freedom".He considered that democratic constitutionalism ensures people's democratic rights,not through the dissemination of "democracy" to the purpose of constitutionalism.He spreaded the Catholic theology,Compared Catholic with the Chinese traditional Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism and put forward the superiority of Catholic.He tried to spread the Catholic "social redemption" to reform Chinese nationality and improve Chinese social customs.Li Wenyu was a typical case embodying the special group of Catholic intellectual in the late Qing dynasty and had special contribution to the modernization of China.
