Objective To investigate the effects of airway maneuvers and lateral positioning on upper airway sizes in normal conscious adults .Method The upper airway of 16 normal healthy volunteers were scaned by MRI scanning in the standard position, taking the median sagittal plane. Then, the subjects were scaned by MRI scanning under chin lift, jaw thrust and lateral positioning separately, getting the median sagittal planes. Measuring the following values by software: the shortest diameter nasopharynx, the shortest diameter of the oral part of pharynx, the distance from the tip of the epiglottis to the posterior pharyngeal wall, the shortest diameter between the tip of the epiglottis and the root of epiglottis , area of the cavity of pharynx. Compared the values from the chin lift, jaw thrust and lateral position to the standard position .The measurements result from chin lift and jaw thrust were compared. Results Compared with the standard position, chin lift and jaw thrust can markedly enlarge the values, significant difference (P <0. 01). The largest increase is the distance from the tip of the epiglottis to the posterior pharyngeal wall , chin lift increase 37. 05% , jaw thrust increase 73. 56%. Chin lift compared with jaw thrus is significant differe- nce (P <0. 01). Lateral positioning compared with the standard position there is no significant difference (P> 0.05).Conclusion All measurement values were obviously increased by chin lift and jaw thrust compared with the unsupported airway, but jaw thrust has proven to be more successful compared with chin lift. No effects were observed about the measurement result from lateral positioning to standard position.
