Objective: To estimate the quality and methods of essays about traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment on chronic superficial gastritis (CSG) which were published in domestic and foreign journals in the past ten years. We analyzed the present conditions and the problems of the research methods about all the researches. Finally, we tried to estimate these essays'degree of reliability and the clinical values, and guide some clinical treatment according to these proofs. Methods:We searched The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (1998~2008.6), EMBASE(1998~2008.6), and some Chinese databases for additional articles(CBMdisc, CMCC, VIP, CNKI) (1998~2008.6). The quality of include randomized controlled trials was evaluated and meta-analysis was performed random effects model with RevMan5.0.Results: Part 1, we collected 98 titles in Chinese on Chinese medicine for chronic superficial gastritis, one in English. And we put the same together. At last, there were 98 titles internalized, they were all in Chinese. The evaluation of methodological quality of clinical trials will be carried on normal circumstances, research methods, statistical methods, and adverse reactions. In an overall view, the methodological quality of trials designed for these literatures regarding TCM therapies for CSG from 1998 to 2008 were poor: the criteria of inclusion and exclusion was absent or not standardized in most of the reports, blinding method was adopted scarcely, drop-out and missed cases were rarely mentioned while adverse effects were reported usually. Data on long-term clinical outcomes and quality of life were lacking. The credibility of data processing is bad, and the design of a project is still not enough perfect with careful. Part 2, we contacted the authors selected for the evaluation through telephone to find out how on earth the trials be carried out .Then further evaluation was made for qualified RCT according to CONSORT statement. These 6 literature methodology's research quality carried on the appraisal, and 2 B levels, 4 C levels. Because the research used different comparison drugs, we should not proceed to a joint Meta-analysis, and calculated only a single effect-quantity. The result showed that the effect of TCM treatment for CSG were effective. In addition to some Chinese drugs were better than the western drugs in alleviation symptoms, the efficacy of the difference was not statistically significant with the control drugs in Hp clearance and Hp eradication rate. These information reported Chinese medicine had not discovered obvious side effect, and prompted the security of the Chinese medicine was higher to treat CSG..Conclusions: At present, the quality of those literatures were low through evaluation. Thus we think knowledge about epidemiology and Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) should made popular to the research of the TCM treatment on CSG so as to improve the quality of essays in this field and have better guidance on clinical practice.
