Zhongjing Treating Heart Palpitations Academic Thought

The dissertation explains the rules of the syndrome differentiation and treatment of palpitations used by Zhang Zhongjing,and summaries the academic characteristics of the treatment of palpitations and the development of his academic thoughts in later ages,by sorting articles concerned with palpitations in Treatise on Cold-Induced Diseases and Synopsis of the Golden Chamber.The cause of palpitations has six aspects: misuse of sudation and purgation in the course of Taiyang Disease, sudation,mild purgation and spit in the course of Shaoyang Disease,hyperposia, shock,other diseases such as cholera,consumptive disease,phlegm-fluid retention.the mechanism of palpitations has three main aspects: deficiency of heart-Yang,fluid-retention under the heart,deficiency of Yin-blood,the exogenous evils touble the heart,or Qi and blood cannot support the circulation and heart-beating because of deficiency,all these can lead to inquietude of the spirit,then,the heart starts to palpitate.in addition,the blockage of psychological aperture by phlegm and evil fire troubling the heart may also cause palpitations.it is necessary to discern interior and exterior,chills and fever,excess and deficiency,when distinguishing the syndromes.fever always means that it is caused by exogenous evils,patients who is the Yang-deficiency syndrome would like pressing ,and his four limbs can be cold,if there is fluid retention stagnating in the interior,patients will be giddy,shaking,vomiting,,stuffiness under the heart,difficult in urination,etc.patients who are annoyed may be caused by deficiency of heart-Yang or evil fire. patients who are deficient in Qi and blood are easy to be frightened ,knotted and intermittent pluse reprents deficiency of Qi and blood.there are three methods in the treatment of palpitations: warming Yang,promoting diuresis,nourishing Yin and blood.there are eleven formulas of treating palpitations,they can be divided into three kinds according to their functions.during them,Ramuli Cimmamomi and Glycyrrhizae Decoction,Fried Glycyrrhizae Decoction,ZhenWu Decoction are three formulas frequently used in modern clinics.There are three characteristics in the treatment of palpitations.the first is to emphasize warming Yang and promoting diuresis.for heart is the Yang meridians of hands,it is the master of Yang Qi in the body,if heart-Yang is deficient,then the spirit is ownerless,or fluid retention stagnating under the heart strikes the heart,which lead to inquietude of the spirit and palpitations.this is why warming Yang and promoting diuresis are the main methods in treating palpitations.the second is to emphasize treating it from the five solid organs.heart is the master of the five solid organs and the six hollow organs,fuctional disorders of liver,spleen,kidney,lung,all can lead to inquietude of the spirit and palpitations.the third is to apply different methods when treating palpitations in cold-induced disease and mixed disease,according to the different rules of their morbidity,cause and mechanism.
