With profound changes in hospital management field, more scholars and hospital management practitioners pay attention to building hospital culture. With consciousness or un-intention, the management of hospital realizes the importance of hospital culture in effective hospital management. They start to make efforts in building hospital culture in order to develop the capability in competitiveness, innovation and sustainable growth. Assessing current status of hospital culture is the first step to ensure successful hospital culture building and the most essential thing is having a specific evaluation measurement tool of hospital culture.There are already many literatures on evaluation tool in corporate organizational culture. But the utilization of the tools are limited in the hospital culture field, because of the unique characteristics of health care service and the specific function of hospital. The credibility and accuracy of evaluation result are questionnaire if simply applying corporate culture evaluation tool in hospital culture assessment. The reliable evaluation tool of hospital culture should be based on the thorough research and understanding of the formation, characteristics, assumption of hospital culture.This paper begins with literatures research, and then comes to a conclusion of the definition of hospital culture in China's context. The theoretical foundation is Schein's organizational culture model and applications in case studies. Qualitative research is applied in case-study of three different hospitals, the most representative one of them is used as the target sample of clinical research. With thorough evaluation of the management characteristics, organizational structure, development and reinforcement of organizational culture, the study focuses on five dimensions of the basic underlying assumptions of hospital culture, using clinical research, as well as utilizing Schein's organizational culture evaluation model.At last, the research concludes evaluation models and measurement dimensions of hospital culture in China's environment, and makes recommendations for the continued study of developing Chinese hospital culture evaluation tool.
