Depression, a kind of disease that is characterized by persistent and serious depressed mood, belongs to affective disorders. Its incidence rate is rising with the development of society and the change of the life style. It has become one of the main diseases that harm the human physical and mental health. The investigation of modern medicine has proved that the reasons and the pathogenesis of the disease are so complex that they are related to multiple factors such as biology, psychology and society. Many problems about it are still unknown. Synthetic antidepressants that are commonly used in modern clinical treatment are surely useful, but they also have some flaws including numerous ill effects and frequent relapse. In recent years many researchers begin to pay more attention to those natural medicines, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).Depression is described as a kind of gloomy syndrome in TCM. Traditional Chinese Medicine has known it for a long time and has a complete theoretical system and a lot of therapy experiences about it. TCM has some advantages and potentialities in the treatment of depression. So it's very necessary to find out the clinical effect and character of TCM treatment, including the effective time and changes of the symptom of TCM. Summarizing and evaluating the clinical research with scientific method in order to guide the clinical use and further study of TCM treatment is meaningful. This research is done for the reasons above. Twenty depression patients are divided 1 nto 2 groups in random in this study, 10 in Chinese drug group, 10 in western medicine group. The first group is treated by Wangyou Anshen Tang (WAT for short), the other group is treated by Dailixin. The treatment lasts for 4 weeks. The diagnosis criteria are defined according to CCMD-3 criteria for depression and the diagnosis criteria about stagnation of liver-qi and deficiency of the spleen of the depressed cycle of Bipolar depression established by Chinese Association of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine in 1991. The accepted criteria are defined by referring to HAMD-17. In pretreatment and each week in post-treatment, the two groups are assessed by HAMD in order to get the effect and effective time of the treatment, and evaluate changes of symptoms of TCM, the level of T3, T4, TSH, and 3 groups of symptoms of depression that are called group of main character, mental and physical. The clinical research shows, in WAT group 2 is healed, 4 have obvious effect, 3 are effective and 1 is useless. The effective rate is 90 %. 4 are healed, 3 have obvious effect, 3 are effective and 0 is useless in Dailixin group. The effective rate is 100%. The result of HAMD shows, the total scores of both groups are remarkable lower than that of pretreatment after 1 week of treatment. There is no significant difference in two groups after treatment. The analysis of 3 groups of symptoms of depression tells thatboth methods of treatment can ameliorate it obviously, and there is no difference between them. The scores of symptoms of TCM are lower than pretreatment and the changes are similar in two groups. The two groups also have no significant difference in changes of each symptom of TCM. 4 in Dailixin group finish the examination of T3, T4 and TSH and there is no obvious change in pretreatment and post-treatment. During the treatment, 1 in WAT group has a headache, 1 feels worse after the treatment and refuses more drug. In Dailixin group, 1 feels thirsty, 1 with heart disease died of sudden stop of heart. The conclusions can be got from the study: WAT and Dailixin can both ameliorate the symptom of depression significantly and they work quickly. There is no significant difference in their effects. Both kinds of treatment can ameliorate the 3 groups of symptoms of depression and the symptoms of TCM, and their effects are similar. The treatment of Dailixin group can not change the level of T3, T4 and TSH obviously. Wangyou Anshen Tang treatment is effective with depression based on clinical research. The further s...
