Object: By studing the experiment of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) of "GuShi" ( 'GS' ) capsule and "xian Ling Gu Baow ( 'XLGB' ) capsule in treatment of steroid-induced avascular necrosis of femoral head (ANFH) of the animal model. Studing on the mechanism of TCM of 'GS' capsule in treatment of steroid-induced ANFH in order to provide theory for clinical use. Methods: 60 adult SD rats were divided into.four groups randomly: ie A: normal control group, B: steroid-induced model group, C: treatment by 'XLGB' capsule group after having been Steroid-Induced group. D: Treatment by 'GS' capsule after having been Steroid-Induced group. Six weeks after having been Steroid-Induced. Both the normal group and the model group were administered intramusculary with normal saline. The 'XLGB' capsule group was administered intramusculary with 'XLGB' capsule. 'GS' capsule group was administered intramusculary with 'GS' capsule. All of the rats were Killed six weeks for the research material. Though the observation and analysis indexes of slice pathomorphology of bone of the femoral head among four different groups. Results: 1. The ratio of empty lacuna was higher significant in the model group than that in the normal group (P<0.01). 2. The ratio of empty lacuna was lower significantly in the 'GS' capsule group than that in the model group (P<0. 01). But there is no significant different compare with that of the normal group (P>0. 05). 3. The ratio of empty lacuna was lower significantly in the 'XLGB' capsule group than that in the model group (P<0. 01), but the ratio of empty lacuna was higher significantly in 'XLGB' capsule group than that in 'GS' capsules group (P<0. 01). 4. The count of osteoplast was higher significantly in 'GS' capsule group than that of the model group (P<0.01). But the lower count of osteoclast was contrary (P<0.01). Conclusion: 1. The character of the steroid-induced ANFH is necrosis of osteocyte. 2. "GuShi" capsule possibly increase the activity of osteocyte. 3. Impling'GS' capsule has a significantly effect in treatment of steroid-induced 'ANFH' of model of animal used for experiment .
