With the development of radiology digitizing technology, particularly the rapid renewal and replacement of radiology apparatus in hospitals in recent years, many radiology apparatus with digital interface DICOM3.0 (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine) have entered hospitals, which creates an opportunity for the rapid development of PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems). As one of the important application of information technology in hospitals, many large and medium-sized hospitals in China are now building PACS systems or ready to do so. Normally the PACS system includes the following components: picture acquisition, picture browse, diagnosis reports compilation, picture storage, picture processing and film print management etc. Among the above components, film print management system is auxiliary and thus often neglected by many PACS suppliers, which leads to limited applicability of the whole PACS system and even has negative impact upon the overall PACS contribution and application effect in hospitals. In this paper, DICOM communication and print management service classes are analyzed. A complete resolution for DICOM network print management is put forward with actual requirements of film print and the current hardware and software conditions in the Center Hospital of Shengli Oilfield being considered. The functions of several SOP classes, including the basic film session class, basic film box class, image box class, printer class and print job class etc., are implemented by VC. We conveniently realized the compilation of film images, the selection of number of copies of the films to be printed, the medium type and film image cells arrangement. Further, the TCP/IP technology is used to access the KODAK laser printers with DICOM print interfaces to the local network so that more than one radiology apparatus such as CT, MR, DR etc. can share one printer, which saved apparatus purchase cost and increased the actual working hours of printers. The overall system is compatible with the printing of DICOM, BMP and JPG formats. The establishment of DLL (dynamic link libraries) and open connectivity interface with other PACS systems facilitate further development in future. Finally, we studied the quality and management of DICOM printing pictures to realize necessary assurance of the quality control of films, with consideration of the representation of DICOM digital printing pictures, the testing of printing pictures and requirements in the specification of film processors.
