Basing on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the rat models with spleen-deficiency in TCM and bronchial asthma in west medicine were set up. The effects of the medicine of " reinforcing earth to strengthen metal" on total cell count (Tot), eosinophil count (Eos), content of Nitric Oxide (NO) in serums and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and the weight of the immune organ were observed. Results: In animals of both groups of spleen-deficiency asthma and asthma, the counts of Tot and Eos and contents of NO and the weight of immune organ increased (P<0.01); the changes of counts of Tot and Eos and the content of NO in animals of spleen-deficiency asthma are significant (compared with those in animals of asthmatic group, P<0.01 or P<0.05), the changes of the weight of immune organ are not statistically significant (compared with those in animals of asthmatic group, P>0.05) . The medicine of "reinforcing earth to strengthen metal" could notably reduce the counts of Tot and Eos (P<0.01) , the content of NO (P<0.01) , and the weight of immune organ (P<0.01 or P<0.05) iConclusions : The content of NO of animals in spleen-deficiency asthma group and asthma group increased obviously. Spleen-deficiency is one of the main pathogeneses of asthma. Spleen-deficiency could make the changes of NO of asthma more serious. The medicine of "reinforcing earth to strengthen metal" could bring on a satisfactory result in treating asthma through decreasing the content of NO.
