Pulse diagnosis is one of the most outstanding characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine. It originated from the examinations of channels and collaterals and mainly applied to deciding the locations of diseases. It has taken several centuries for pulse diagnosis to perfect its methods and unify the names and shapes. Along with this process pulse diagnosis has been applied to deciding the nature of diseases according to diagnosis and treatment based on an overall analysis of syndromes. Pulse diagnosis is an essential part of "Jin Kui Yao Lue" , which deals with the apotheosis of the therapeutics of miscellaneous internal diseases. It runs through the whole process of diagnosis and treatment and it is related to every aspect of theories, methods, formulas and herbs. Zhang Zhongjing not only employed the pulse diagnosis in explanation the onset and progress of an illness, differentiation of syndroms, selection of remedies and estimation of prognosis, but also established essential pulses, possible pulses, altered pulses and deadly pulses of some diseases of internal medicine, surgery and gynaecology.Up to now, the documents that study the sphygmology of "Jin Kui Yao Lue" are mostly focused on the sites where the pulse is felt, the general conditions of the pulse and its indications, the rules of operating pulse diagnosis and so on, which are not very profound and comprehensive. For this reason the paper has made a generalization and summarization of the sphygmology of Jin Kui Yao Lue.First, the paper describes the historical origin of Zhongjing's sphygmology, and approaches its distinguishing features from different angles, summing up the guiding principle , and particularly discussing how Zhongjing applied the technique of pulse-feeling when he diagnosed and treated the miscellaneous internal diseases.Secondly, the paper makes an inquiry into how to obtain the pathogenesis based on pulse-feeling in the diagnosis and treatment of miscellaneous internal diseases, which was the quintessence of Zhongjing's sphygmology. The paper also points out that because the sphygmology of TCM diverges from Zhongjing's sphygmology since Mai Jing, it has lost the method of differentiating syndromes based on the pulse conditions gradually. There are four parts obtaining pathogenesis based on the pulse conditions in Jin Kui Yao Lue: ①enumerating the alterations of the pulse condition to obtain normal pathogenesis; ②comparing the alterations of the pulse condition to obtain abnormal pathogenesis; ③distinguishing the pulse conditions to varing degrees to obtain pathogenesis; ④prognosising the pulse conditions to obtain pathogenesis. The important part of this paper is that it has abstracted essential pulses, possible pulses, abnormal pulses and deadly pulses in convulsive disease, malaria, pectoral pain with stuffiness, edema and jaundice describes in "Jin Kui Yao Lue", and listed the viewpoints that are related to this aspect of the later periods. It illustrates that "Jin Kui Yao Lue" has produced an programmatic effect on posterity about the utilization of the pulse diagnosis in miscellaneous internal diseases both in theory and practice.Lastly, the paper illustrates 15 main types of pulse according to the 148 clauses concerned with pulse in Jin Kui Yao Lue , sums up the content of obtaining pathogenesis based on the pulse conditions, and comprehensively systematizes the data of sphygmology in Jin Kui Yao Lue.
