The study of the effect of Jia Wei Zheng Chai Hu Yin (JWZCHY) on inhibiting influenza virus A,B and Rhinoviruses has been doneThe author has reviewed the ancient and up-date data on knowledges especially treatment of Influenza. Some medicines which have be use to treat influenza, such as amantadine, rimantadine and ribavirin, caneffectively inhibit the influenza virus, but they have many side effects. So far, this infectious disease have not effectively control this infectious disease, and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) plays a more and more important treatment of influenza.The formula (JWZCHY) is a modification one of Zheng Chai Hu Yin (ZCHY) prescribed by Zhang Jing-yue of Ming dynasty. ZCHY is mainly composed of Bupleurum root. , ledebouriella root, fresh ginger and so on. It has the function of dispersing pathogenic wind and relieving exterior syndrome and has been used to treat exterior syndrome. TCM believes that the main etiology of exterior syndrome is wind. Influenza is often caused by wind with heat or cold and always appears the symptoms of heat toxin, for the cold pathogen may often transform into heat resulting from stagnated pathogens. It is therefore such herbs such as wild chrysanthemum flower, isatis root, cordate houttuynia are added in the formula to clear heat and remove toxic agent.The results of the experiments in vitro show that JWZCHY could remarkably inhibit the pathopoiesic effect of influenza virus FM1, B701 on WDCK cells. JWZCHY at the dose of 1.2g/kg/d and 2.4g/kg/d for five could can alleviate the pathological change of pneumonia caused by influenza virus(compared with the control group, p<0.01). Though it's curative effect is not as good as ribavirin, i t was better than ZCHY. Chishao, Yuxingcao, Banlangen could alleviate the change of pneumonia caused by influenza virus(P<0.05), but Baishao could not. JWZCHY also could remarkably decrease the mice mortality caused by large dose of influenza virus and prolong the life of the mice. During the experiments, no obvious toxicity of JWZCHY was observed.
