Sichuan Unicom Boss Project Risk Management

This thesis discussed the risk management of software project. It is often ignored during the practice, so many project managers used to rejecting or escaping from problem to manage project risk. Large software projects need the careful plan, the method of identifying and monitoring the risk factors, the method of progress controlling, the risk management tactic and emergency plan, otherwise, if unexpected factors appearing, it will frequently lead to the offset of the project time limit and the ripples effect, the postponing and exceeding of budget, even the total project loosed. Generally, successful projects have a good risk management, so software projects should take risk management for one of the important content in software project management.The'BOSS project'from Sichuan Unicom Ltd., will demonstrate the necessity for research on risk management. Combining theory with practice, this thesis will utilize the methods, procedures and the tools, which are used in project risk study, via the Boss project. Moreover, five processes of project risk management will also be used to analyze the BOSS case, including risk management planning, risk identification, risk assessment (qualitative/quantitative), risk response, risk monitoring & control. In the risk planning stage, the analysis deals with target selection,risk scheme design, project organization plans and responsibilities division. In the risk identification stage, we adopt experts scoring to determine the main risk. As a result we found four types risk. The determination risk includes the selecting risk of software & hardware suppliers, software function and the 2nd developing risk. The execution risk includes the risk bringing from people, needs analysis risk, project progress risk, project cost risk, quality risk and cooperation risk. Management risk includes procedure reorganizing risk and management change risk. The operation risk includes starting risk, accident risk, safety defect, people capability and project maintaining risk. The risk response stage minimizes the risk happening through quote, project management, training, etc. The risk monitoring & controlling stage set up the monitoring system to evaluate the project afterwards. Through the research on BOSS project risk management, I systematically summarize the risk management of software industry and basically establish a risk management mode of software project, which must be valuable and significant for my future work in both theoretical and practical grounds".
