The thesis firstly explained the challenges and opportunities in front of the enterprisesin the Knowledge Economy. Then analyzed the necessity of applying informationtechnology for the enterprise to catch the pace of the change. It will experience four stagesfor enterprises to apply IT. Small-medium enterprises have their own characteristics. Thethesis identified the problem of by which standard to define the small-medium enterprises.It is worthy to study the problem of applying the IT in small-medium enterprises and IThas a great effect to small-medium enterprises.The thesis reviewed that from the angle of function, IT application in enterprisesexperienced four stages. After retrospect the history of integrated information systemdevelopment, the history and the present conditions of enterprises' IT application wereintroduced.The thesis emphasized the theories and methods for small-medium enterprises toapply IT. Small-medium enterprises should make an alignment between the enterprisestrategies with the enterprise's IT strategies. The concept, categories, reasons of BusinessProcess Re-engineering and the method of integrating BPR with IT application wereexplained. After introducing the five stages for small-medium enterprises to apply IT, theauthor proposed a set of information system architectures for small-medium enterprisesoperated in China.Based on the analysis of the difficulties of small-medium enterprises' IT applications,the author investigated two small-medium manufacturing enterprises. Focusing on thebackground of the enterprises, the background and the process of the IT application, theauthor made a summary of the experience and the lessons of small-medium enterprises toapply IT. And from the angle of the aggregation of small-medium enterprises, the authorproposed the solution for accelerating the IT application.
