The combination of mobile communication network and wireless sensor networks (WSN) gives birth to mobile wireless sensor networks (mWSN). mWSN can not only bring mobile communication network with new applications and services, but also bring WSN with more users and flexible long-distance communication. In order to address the problem of various devices'platform heterogeneity, this paper advances a platform independent hardware expansion method. With this method, a platform-independent intelligent SD (iSD) interface was designed. Moreover, a device called mobile gateway to WSN, which aims at helping mobile terminals access WSN, was fulfilled based on iSD.SD interface is the basis of the mobile gateway referred above. In this paper, the platform independent expansion method used by iSD is illustrated, as well as the architecture of iSD interface and the earlier experiment which well validates the expansion method.The author have successively designed three version of mobile gateway referred above. This paper shows the concrete board-level design, including solution selection, schematic design, key points of lay out and routing.The logic design in FPGA realizes the core function of this mobile gateway. This paper relates the logic architecture of iSD interface and signaling interaction among different modules. Meanwhile, a MISC soft-core designed by the author himself, named ZtCore, is also discussed, including the architecture, instruction set, tool chain, performance evaluation and comparison. At last, the design of some other relevant interfaces in iSD is also showed.For the expedience of successors'and third party's development, this paper also introduces the development tool of FPGA, the generation and transplantation tool of file system, etc. The development tool for third party consists of the ZtProg (Zero-added Tiny Programmer) which is a programmer and also a debugger, software that generates values in special registers of iSD, and software that generates test bench for debugging iSD interface.The hardware expansion method and iSD interface can be well applied in various function expansions for mobile terminals, instead of only being restricted to mobile gateway referred in this paper. Therefore, this method possesses strong practicability. The designed ZtCore, with high code density and efficient run time behavior, is one of the shortest instruction length soft cores. The designed mobile gateway can help mobile terminals directly access WSN, providing hardware basis for relevant researches and achieving a promising application prospect.
