In OFDM based LTE network, it's one of the main objectives to reduce interference and improve spectrum efficiency for interference coordination research. According to 3GPP meetings, the emphasis for interference coordination discussion moves from static scheme to semi-static and dynamic scheme gradually. In addition, joint frequency and power optimization has been proposed instead of simple frequency planning method and the combination with other radio resource management schemes such as scheduling makes more flexible configuration of limited wireless resource and brings more opportunities for system performance improvement. Most of current interference mitigation schemes are based on coordinated utilization of frequency resource between cells (sectors). Co-channel interference is reduced to some extent with flexible design of frequency reuse factor. In addition, with the introduction of simple power allocation, cell edge performance is largely improved. However, from system level simulation results, it is obvious that such improvement is at the cost of overall system efficiency lost. Therefore, one of the main tasks for interference coordination research is to figure out the basic relationship between radio resource configuration and system performance and design efficient coordination scheme to improve cell edge performance with little system efficiency reduction. Joint power and frequency optimization provides a good way to achieve such aim.In this thesis, firstly we introduce the basic idea and evaluation methodology for interference coordination schemes in LTE system. Proposals are collected, analyzed and compared. Based on the comprehensive understanding of current schemes and from the perspective of system coverage and spectrum efficiency improvement, we propose a flexible and efficient interference coordination scheme, which combines frequency planning and power allocation and is very meaningful for future research and LTE network deployment.
