All-optical wavelength converter(WC) is the key devices in the future all-optical communication and broadband networks of which can improve the flexibility and scalability of the wavelength division multiplexing system (WDM) to overcome switching node contention problems caused by network congestion to achieve wavelength reuse. WC can help the network rout effectively and enhance the adaptability of the network to various fault. Based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA),the wavelength converter has many advantages, such as, high conversion efficiency, low power consumption, etc, so it's very popular with people.all-optical wavelength conversion based on cross-gain modulation (XGM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) in SOA including three aspects: the theory, simulation and experiments,is studied in the paper ,main contents are as follows:Firstly, the basic theoretical characteristics of the SOA is been analysised, then the extinction ratio equation and the conversion efficiency equation of wavelength conversion based on SOA-XGM has been deduced, based on the two models, wavelength conversion process is simulated in theory. We also gives a explanation on the mechanism of the SOA-XPM through theoretical analysis.Secondly, in the Chapter three,we has done much Simulation Study. The process of all-optical Wavelength conversion based on SOA-XGM and SOA-XPM has been simulated through the Opticalsystem software, we Observe the changes on the SOA-XGM output extinction ratio of light signals ,when the input control pulse power, continuous optical power and injection current of SOA changes. The SOA-XPM output chirp are discussed through the simulations, also by shaping filter, the output pulse signals of WC based on the SOA-XPM can be positive or anti-code,and the related parameters which can effect the quality of the positive pulse signals has been discussed in the Chapter three in the paper.Thirdly, Experimental study. For the wavelength conversion based on SOA-XGM, we carried out 40Gbit /s all-optical wavelength conversion experiment consisting of two parts: the Discussion of various parameters which affect the extinction ratio of the output optical signals; Using narrow-band filter to suppress the pattern effect experiment is another one. While for the wavelength conversion based on SOA-XPM, two experiments have been carried out,one is 40Gbit /s wavelength conversion of positive yards and the other is multi-wavelength conversion experiment.
