Purpose To study the clinical significance of the expression of VEGF and PCNA in pterygium and normal conjunctiva. To investigate the correlation between VEGF,PCNA and pterygium. Methods 35 cases of pterygium tissues operated in our hospital and 10 cases of normal body conjunctiva were alternatively stained by histochemical VEGF and PCNA. The VEGF and PCNA expression were compared between two groups. Results Hematoxylin and eosin stain showed pterygium was a disease mainly with proliferation. The VEGF and PCNA protein was expression in pterygium tissues. The expression of VEGF and PCNA was significantly higher in pterygium than in normal conjunctival epithelium The positive rate of the VEGF protein in pterygium was significantly higher than normal conjunctiva (U=29.000, W=84.000, Z=-4.205, P=0.000).The positive rate of the PCNA protein in pterygium was significantly higher than normal conjunctiva (U=74.000, W=129.000, Z=-2.868,P=0.004). The expression of VEGF and PCNA showed positive relationship(rs=0.599, P=0.000).Conclusion Proliferation were seen in pterygium. The VEGF and PCNAis correlation in pterygium. The results show that pterygium may coursed by the imbalance between apoptosis and proliferation. The expression of VEGF and PCNA were of showed positive relationship...
