Study On Modern Church Building In Qingdao

Qingdao, as a modern city of only 100-year history, has accumulated rich cultural heritage in the process of historical development, which featured a distinctive historical and cultural city landscape with far-reaching connotation. As a modern cultural crossroad of Europe and Asia because of its significant characteristics of China's modern colonial city, Qingdao has played an important role in the modern history and social development of China. To reflect social changes at that time, church buildings are served as one of the most sensitive types of public constructions. Study of these modern church buildings that owns distinctive local characteristics and features of the times can help us to understand the meaning of modern construction and values between East and West, which contributes to the understanding of European construction ideas, technology, art and its impact on the modern architecture of Qingdao.In this paper, the object of study is the Qingdao church architecture for the period of modern history. Firstly through the collection and research of relevant data for dissemination of the Christian from the West to Qingdao, the author tried to form a more comprehensive and overall understanding of the Christian development in Qingdao. Then first-hand field research and mapping for a few typical examples of the construction as the main information, combined with relevant literature, the author conducted more in-depth analysis and feasibility studies, focus on their historical development, construction layout, building monomer and detailed characteristics. Based on the detailed analysis of historical data and research on the heritages, the author has given a more comprehensive view on modern architectural style of this city. Finally, compared to other religious buildings of west and east tradition, the characteristics of modern church building in Qingdao were summed up, in order to provide certain information for the future protection of Qingdao's church building.
