The urban recreational square is regarded as a focus in the developing process of urban area. At present, the cities face a lot of problems, among which the depravation of ecological environment and the beating of the urban spirit should be considered firstly. Fortunately, the urban recreational square can slove both problems, and its meaning is great. Therefore, it will develop rapidly in city, but the designers are busy with practice and negligence of thinking now. For the abve_mentioned reason, the study on the urban recreational square is very necessary. The thesis plans to find out the future aim of the urban recreational square by analysing its definition, classification, its history of Chinese and The West, its design criteria, and the behavior and psychology of citizen in open space of city, etc. The thesis has explained some important points in the urban recreational square design. For example, on the survey report of WU YI Civic Square of Changsha, we can draw the following conclusion :The square lacks arbors. It looks like the ignorance of the designer, but through analysing carefully, in fact , the technology of planting on the artificial ground and construction' s roof is inadequate. Another example, the behavior and psychological characteristics of people in the open space of city, which are often ignored by the designer , and are very important in creating two kinds of basic behavior space:facility for rest and space for walking.Through researching various fields of urban recreational square, the thesis trys to achieve the overall situation for the designer. Similarly, it analysed several typical instances at home and abroad. Especially , through the way of the survey report, designers can make a comment on the result. The subjectivity and justice can offer designers a full preparation at the earlier stage of design, and the effective feedback information of squares which have been built . It makes design more scientific , not designers' subjective assumptions.
